Guru Pournima (“ Pournima means full-moon”) is the one which disciples and devotees honor and felicitate their guru and seek his or her special blessing. The festival originated in the Buddha’s time when the monks used to take diksha (instructions on their spiritual practice) at the beginning of the rainy season. The practice was then borrowed be the Jain tradition and later the Hindus.

Significance of Guru Pournima

Guru Pournima is considered to be the most auspicious day as it is being celebrated in the memory of great sage Vyasa. Guru Vyasa wrote Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavata and also taught Dattatreya who is being considered to be the Guru of Gurus.Guru Vyasa is being worshipped by the devotees in honour of his divine personage with meditation, sacred songs, hyms and events. Puja being dedicated to Guru is being considered as doing Puja to the God directly as Gurus are being considered to be the direct representative of God. Guru’s Puja in the evening is being considered to be more sacred than doing Puja in the morning. Devotees are supposed to keep fast during the day of Puja.
